Avocado Oil Health Benefits

The flavour of avocado oil is slightly grassy with a very mild avocado flavour. It tastes more neutral than olive oil, especially once it’s cooked.

Depending on the processing method used, avocado oil generally has a smoke point of between 200 degrees Celsius and 299 degrees Celsius. This high smoke point makes avocado oil suitable for medium to high heat cooking methods such as frying, sauteing and roasting as it can withstand high temperatures without breaking down and producing harmful compounds (unrefined, cold pressed avocado oil has a slightly lower smoke point than refined & processed oil).

From the outside, it might just look like any other oil in an opaque bottle, but it is what’s on the inside that counts!

Health benefits of cold pressed avocado oil

  • HEART HEALTH: Avocado oil is rich in monounsaturated fats, which can help lower bad cholesterol levels and improve heart health.
  • SKIN HEALTH: Avocado oil is also an excellent source of antioxidants such as vitamin E, which can help keep your skin looking youthful for longer by nourishing and hydrating the skin. It can also help to minimize damage caused by free radicals and boost collagen production.
  • ANTI-INFLAMMATORY: The monounsaturated fatty acids, antioxidants and phytosterols in avocado oil has strong anti-inflammatory properties, which means it can help relieve joint pain and soothe skin irritations
  • EYE HEALTH: Avocado oil is rich in lutein, a nutrient that is important for eye health and that helps to protect against age-related vision problems
  • WEIGHT MANAGEMENT: Avocado oil is relatively low in calories and contains healthy monounsaturated fats which can provide satiety and improve lipid profiles. In addition, it may help to regulate blood sugar levels, which can be beneficial for weight management and weight loss
  • NUTRIENT UPTAKE: Having a high content of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids, avocado oil can enhance the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (including vitamins A, D, E & K). Additionally, avocado oil contains antioxidants such as carotenoids and Vit E, which can protect the body from oxidative damage and support overall health.

Uses for avocado oil

Cooking

  • Use in a salad dressing
  • Ue to marinate your barbeque meat
  • Use to cook or fry your meat and veggies on the stove top
  • Use to bake or roast veggies in the oven

Skincare

  • Skin moisturizer: Avocado oil is high in oleic acid (a type of fatty acid) that allows the oil to absorb deeply into the skin. To soften and soothe very dry, chapped skin, massage a small amount of oil into the skin (this is especially good for elbows, knees and cuticles).
  • Avocado sugar scrub: Sugar can exfoliate away dead, dry skin cells, letting fresh new cells grow and shine through. Sugar is also a humectant – attracting moisture from the air and transferring it to your skin, helping your skin stay soft & moisturized. Using a sugar scrub with avocado oil will leave your skin feeling super soft and moisturised.
  • Avocado oil hair mask: Just as it can help soften your skin, avocado oil can also help to condition and soften your hair. Your hair will look shinier and healthier overall.
  • Hair growth boost: High in Vitamins E, D & potassium, avocado oil may be beneficial for hair growth. The nutrients in the oil help to nourish and strengthen the hair which can lead to faster and healthier growth.
  • Makeup remover: Although a bit unconventional, you don’t have to add anything to the oil to use it as a makeup remover. Simply pour a bit of oil onto a cotton pad & gently rub the oil over the area with makeup. Massage the oil residue left on your skin in to take advantage of its moisturizing abilities.
  • Massage oil: Because of its high fat content, avocado oil is an excellent choice for use as a massage oil. You can add essential oils for fragrance.

Other Uses

  • Oil pulling: Avocado oil can be used for oil pulling, which is a natural dental hygiene practice that involves swishing oil around in the mouth to remove bacteria and improve oral health.
  • Aromatherapy: Avocado oil is an excellent carrier oil for essential oils in aromatherapy as it is easily absorbed and gentle on the skin
  • Diaper rash ointment: For an all-natural option, avocado oil can be a great alternative to traditional diaper rash creams. Use a small amount of oil to rub into the irritated area to help soothe it.

With so many uses, it’s a no-brainer! Always keep some avocado oil in the pantry. Avocado oil is a genuinely stable oil to have in your kitchen, it lasts for more than two years. Always keep the oil in a dark, cool place away from direct sunlight (an opaque glass bottle is the best vessel for avo oil).

The less processed and refined the avocado oil, the higher its nutrient content.
